Michelle Manghise

DREXEL UNIVERSITY
Associate Program Director, Music Industry; Assistant Teaching Professor
Philadelphia, PA

A music industry professional with more than 30 years of international experience representing songwriters and their intellectual property, Michelle has represented the catalogs of the world's most well-respected and influential songwriters, producers and recording artists.

A native New Yorker, Michelle began her music career in the 1970s playing bass in a number of punk bands, eventually moving to West Berlin, Germany to live and play in the underground scene which was thriving in the shadow of the Berlin Wall.  Having limited success as a performer, Michelle moved to LA in the 1980’s to pursue a more serious industry career!

Her first desk job was interning in the Hollywood Boulevard offices of tiny indie publisher Bug Music, where she worked with the music of such legendary, iconic songwriters as Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Burnett, John Hiatt, Johnny Cash, Roseanne Cash, Woody Guthrie, Lucinda Williams, Iggy Pop punk icons The Cramps and The Germs, and various artists from the rosters of the legendary indie labels Frontier Records and Metal Blade. As the company grew, Michelle took on increased responsibilities and was appointed Copyright Manager. (In 2011, Bug Music was purchased by BMG Rights Management Group for $300 million dollars).

Tiring of the LA scene, Michelle moved back to NYC to serve as U.S. Marketing Director for UK-based Fiction Management/Publishing/Records companies, where she helped to break alternative darlings, THE CURE, in America.

Her next gig was running Cherry Lane Music Group’s copyright, licensing and royalties divisions on behalf of their publishing and print music companies, their label (Guitar Recordings), magazine (Guitar Magazine) and video company (Cherry Lane Video Productions). (In 2010, Cherry Lane Music was sold to BMG for an undisclosed sum between $85 and 100 million dollars).

Michelle was eventually lured away from her indie roots into the corporate publishing world by the world's largest publisher, EMI Music Publishing. Running EMI’s TV/Film Copyright Administration Department in NY, she represented the legacy catalogs of Lennon & McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Lou Reed and a diverse roster of artists including Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Goo Goo Dolls, PINK, Alicia Keys and producers Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin, Jam/Lewis and Salaam Remi. She was also involved in EMI's acquisition of the Motown song catalog containing over 15,000 copyrights and 100 Number One hits. She also represented the works of TV/film composers including John Barry, creator of the famous James Bond theme and scores.

When EMI signed STING, Michelle was transferred to EMI's London office to personally manage his copyrights and to serve as Head of Administration for the UK & Europe. Working closely with A&R, she also managed the works of hit writer Diane Warren, Peter Gabriel's WOMAD companies, Queen, Blur and many other high-profile clients. She also managed the acquisitions of the HIT & RUN catalog (Phil Collins) and WINDSWEPT-PACIFIC (the world's largest catalog acquisition as of that date, purchased for $200 million dollars and containing 40,000 copyrights).

Michelle returned to N.Y. to open the US office of UK-based, start-up indie publisher, Kobalt Music. As Sr. VP of Global Administration & Client Relations she helped to develop their innovative online administration and licensing platform. Kobalt's roster included such luminaries as Dr. Luke, Max Martin, EMINEM, Gwen Stefani, Desmond Child, Toby Keith, Barry Manilow and James Brown.

Michelle has also handled a number of independent projects for a variety of labels, publishers, managers and film producers. For the past five years, Michelle has taught music industry classes at Drexel University, where she serves as Assistant Director of the Music Industry Program and runs the music publishing arm of its Mad Dragon Music Group.
